The game begins with Cookie & Cream planning to attend their clan's moon festival, however to everyone's dismay the moon is completely gone! If the moon isn't recovered, there will never be a moon festival ever again! Confronted by a messenger (who is also a chicken), they are told that they must go save the moon. And with a flash and the cry of the rooster, they're transported to a mysterious island where their adventure begins...

After traversing each world and defeating the bosses within them, they perform a ritual using a statue of each boss, and this transports them to the castle in the sky, Tumble world, where the moon is hiding. It takes much cooperation and navigating many hazardous bottomless pits in the sky, but eventually they make it to the moon's castle, and after a rough battle, it swears to never leave the night sky again, saving the moon festival and all future moon festivals. However, back at the rabbit clan, Cookie & Cream are nowhere to be seen. This is because they're still on the moon, pounding mochi and keeping it company so it will never run away ever again. This actually ties into a piece of japanese folklore, that states some dark spots on the moon are actually a rabbit pounding mochi with a hammer.
